Your team can absolutely learn it themselves for basic reporting but it gets harder when you are trying to build a data model that does not break when you add new sources, writing DAX measures that perform at scale and setting up low level security. A focused set of dashboards typically takes around 4 weeks from kickoff to delivery. Larger engagements - like enterprise-wide rollouts with data modeling, governance, and multiple departments - run longer but follow a continuous delivery model.
Yes. Power BI is now the reporting layer of Microsoft Fabric, and Microsoft keeps adding Copilot and Direct Lake features to it. What’s changing is licensing: Premium P-SKUs are being replaced by Fabric F-SKUs, so plan the capacity move rather than a tool change.
Pro is per-user for standard reporting. Premium is capacity-based for large-scale distribution. PPU gives Premium features at a per-user price. Fabric is Microsoft’s newest offering that bundles Power BI with data engineering and AI under one license. Power BI supports these compliance standards but it’s not compliant out of the box. It needs proper configuration - encryption, access controls, audit logging, data residency settings, and in the case of HIPAA, a Business Associate Agreement with Microsoft.
